Strathfield Council provides a three bin service for recyclables, garbage and garden vegetation.

When is my recycling collected?

Your recycling collection (yellow lid bin) is collected fortnightly on the same day as your garbage bin. To find out which day your recycling is collected refer to the Waste Collection Calendar or phone Council’s Waste Hotline on 9748 9611 to have a Calendar posted to you.

Where do I get a recycling, garbage or garden vegetation bin?

Council provides recycling, garbage and garden vegetation bins for every residential property.  If your bin becomes damaged, lost or stolen, please contact Council’s Waste Hotline on 9748 9611. Charges may apply for bin replacement. Arrangements will then be made for a replacement bin, which should arrive within 5 working days.

What can I put in my bins?

Please visit the Waste Management and Recycling section of this website or your Recycling and Waste Services Guide to find out what you can put in your bins.

What if I have extra garbage that won’t fit into my bin?

Council’s Waste Management and Recycling Service has been designed to take less waste than previously in order to encourage residents to recycle.

If you find that you do not have enough bin space you may be able to organise additional bin(s). Council will conduct an audit at your home to determine the best way to both meet your waste management needs and achieve positive environmental outcomes.

Additional bins are charged in accordance with Council’s Fees and Charges. For further information please contact Council’s Waste Hotline on 9748 9611.

Not having adequate bin space is not an excuse for the following (which are considered illegal dumping and may attract fines):

  • To use an incorrect bin to dispose of excess waste material eg household garbage in the garden vegetation bin.
  • To place any of your excess waste in a neighbours bin without their prior permission.
  • To place excess material outside of bins eg on the street, naturestrip or on top of bins.
  • To place excess domestic waste in any public bins eg park bins.

When can I put out my bins?

Place your bins out adjacent to the kerb on the night before your collection day.

I have difficulty I placing my bins out for collection, can you help?

Should you be an elderly pensioner and cannot physically place your bins out for collection, please contact Council’s Waste Hotline on 9748 9611.

Where should I place my bins?

Ensure that the bin handles are facing your property and that the bins are placed at least 50cm apart. If the bins are placed too close together the truck’s “arm” cannot collect them. Place your bins at least 1m clear of adjacent trees or parked cars, as these can obstruct collection.

Return your bins to your property as soon possible, once they have been emptied.

Why wasn't my bin emptied?

Some of the reasons your bin may not have been emptied are:

  • You put your bins out too late.
  • The bin was facing the wrong direction, the bin handles need to face your property and not the kerb or roadside. As the collection vehicles have a driver-only mechanical lifting arm, the bins need to be within easy reach.
  • The bin was too close to trees, a light pole or a parked car.
  • You overloaded your bin so that it was too heavy (max weight 70kg).
  • You overfilled your bin so that the lid did not close.
  • You placed additional materials beside or on top of your bin.
  • You contaminated your bin by placing unacceptable items in your bin.

Usually a card is placed in your letterbox that explains why it was not collected. If not, please contact Council’s Waste Hotline on 9748 9611.

My bin was missed – what can I do?

If you did not receive a card in your mail box explaining why your bin was not collected please contact Council’s Waste Education Officer on 9748 9999. Council will arrange for a contractor to pick up your bin within 24 hours.
