In its final report in January 2014, the Independent Local Government Panel has recommended the creation of a “Inner West Council”, consisting of amalgamating the current Strathfield, Burwood, Ashfield, Canada Bay, Leichardt and Marrickville Councils to form an Inner West Council of over 350,000 residents.   

The NSW Independent Local Government Review Panel final report 'Revitalising Local Government' was released in January 2014. Significant changes to the culture, structures, finances and operations of councils are explored in the paper including amalgamation of Strathfield Council with other councils in the Inner West and Southern Sydney.

Council considered the recommendations of this report at the Council meeting of 1 April 2014 and lodged a submission to the Office of Local Government on 4 April 2014.  The following reports have been issued:

Council supports its local community organisation ‘Save our Strathfield’ in the fight to maintain an independent and sustainable Strathfield Council.

Review of Local Government Acts

The Minister for Local Government appointed a four member Local Government Acts Taskforce to develop new, modern legislation that meets the current and future needs of the community, local government and the local government sector.

The final Taskforce report was released in January 2014.
